Overview

Galatia SIL is the second release of a Biblical Greek font package from SIL International. The typeface is almost identical to the original SIL Galatia font, but is now encoded according to Unicode 3.1.

The Galatia SIL fonts contain most of the symbols defined in Unicode 3.1 for Latin-1, Greek (excluding Coptic), Macintosh Character Set (US Roman), and 850WE/Latin-1 and are supplied in Regular and Bold weights.

The associated files with this package constitute the Galatia SIL Greek Unicode Fonts.

SIL International (SIL) is an organization of linguists dedicated to the study and promotion of the thousands of languages around the world. SIL's Non-Roman Script Initiative serves SIL by developing products to assist in the publication of linguistic texts.

As a service to the general academic community, we are happy to make this package available at no charge. You may (and are encouraged to) share this package with your friends and co-workers, but with the following restrictions:

  • All files must be copied together, including this one.
  • No fee may be charged for the fonts.
  • They may not be used as a basis for other fonts.

Even though these fonts are “free,” SIL retains all copyright and ownership of the included fonts and reserves the right to restrict their use and distribution at any time. They may be placed on websites, etc. but cannot be included in (or bundled with) any commercial product including hard disks or CD-ROMs without specific written permission.

Features

The Galatia SIL Greek Unicode Fonts are a new version of the SIL Galatia font released by SIL in 1997.This new font package differs from the previous ones in the following ways:

  • They are Unicode fonts. The encoding is entirely different from the old fonts. Data typed with the old fonts will have to be re-typed or converted before it will display with the Galatia SIL fonts. The Galatia SIL fonts will only work in applications which support Unicode.
  • The name was changed to “Galatia SIL” to reflect new SIL font naming conventions.
  • The Latin-1 codepage (“A-Z”, “a-z” plus some punctuation, etc.) is included in the font. This is to assist with viewing Latin or Roman text. The Macintosh character set for US Roman and the 850 WE/Latin-1 encodings are also included.
  • You will need to use a keyboard program, but can use any Greek Unicode keyboard you prefer. No keyboards are provided (but see Resources). There is a  Keyman keyboard provided here: Greek (polytonic precomposed) Unicode Keyman keyboard.

The following glyphs were added:

03D7 GREEK KAI SYMBOL

03F3 GREEK LETTER YOT

03F4 GREEK CAPITAL THETA SYMBOL

Combining Diacritics

Latin-1 (MS Windows CP 1252)

The following glyphs were revised:

03DD GREEK SMALL LETTER DIGAMMA Shape changed to more standard form. f-like shape retained as potential presentation form.

0384 GREEK TONOS Redesigned to add slight tilt toward right;Old shapes not retained; (note: this affects all monotonic composites); period, colon, semicolon, greek question mark all enlarged

The fonts are provided only in raw TrueType format (usable in Windows/Mac OS X).

Requirements

These fonts were designed for the following systems:

  • Windows 9x or greater
  • Mac OS X
  • Linux
  • Applications must support Unicode in order to use the fonts

Users should download and install  Adobe Acrobat to read and print the documentation.

If you have text files from pre-Unicode systems such as SIL Galatia, the files will have to be converted to Unicode to use with these fonts. Two draft conversion programs have been included with this package. One is for Consistent Changes© and the other is for TECKit©. Neither of the Greek mappings have been extensively tested. We will make Greek conversion programs available via the Mapping Files page as they are developed.

Release History

Version 2.0.1b released, 7 May 2008 - removal of Keyman keyboard

Version 2.0.1 released, 30 June 2005 - bug-fix for issue causing crashes on Linux.

Windows Unicode Version 2.0 released; October 2002.

Known Issues

The Galatia SIL font is not compatible with Microsoft Word 2004. The Galatia SIL fonts were developed before Word 2004 was released, so it was not possible to test them with Word 2004 prior to their release. We have encountered incompatibilities between Word 2004 and other SIL Unicode fonts as well, and have not determined the causes or cures.

In testing we found it was possible to type text in TextEdit, then cut and paste it into a Word 2004 document.

Please refer also to the information available on using SIL fonts on non-Windows operating systems.

Support

As these fonts are distributed at no cost, we are unable to provide a commercial level of personal technical support. We will, however, try to resolve problems that are reported to us.

Please note that these fonts are intended for use by experienced computer users. If you download these fonts, please check out all the links on the web pages for them, and read all the information and instructions they contain. Installing and using these fonts is not a trivial matter. Additional information is also available on the general Font FAQ page.

See the documentation for installation and usage. If that fails to answer your question, you can contact us at:
