Introduction

Andika New Basic is a limited-character-set (no extended IPA or Cyrillic) version of Andika that includes regular, bold, italic and bold-italic faces. Andika New Basic gives a preview of what a whole range of new weights will eventually look like.

New Features

There are some wonderful new features available in Andika New Basic that are still missing from the main Andika family:

  • Italic!
  • Bold!
  • Bold Italic!
  • Capital J alternate

Q&A

Question: What is the difference between Andika and Andika New Basic?

Answer:

  • Andika New Basic has all four faces: Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold-Italic.
  • Andika has a more complete character set comparable to Charis SIL and Doulos SIL.
  • Andika New Basic has a limited character set, supporting only the Basic Latin and Latin-1 Supplement Unicode ranges, plus a selection of the more commonly used extended Latin characters, with miscellaneous diacritical marks, symbols and punctuation. (See download below. The pdf shows Andika-only characters highlighted in yellow.)

Because of the reduced character set, Andika New Basic includes only some of the font features in Andika.

Supported character ranges

The supported character set for Andika New Basic is much smaller than for the main Andika font. These "New Basic" fonts support only the Basic Latin and Latin-1 Supplement Unicode ranges, plus a selection of the more commonly used extended Latin characters, with miscellaneous diacritical marks, symbols and punctuation.

In particular, these fonts do not support:

  • Full extended Latin IPA
  • Complete support for Central European languages
  • Cyrillic

A much more complete character set will be supported in a future version of the complete Andika fonts. These "New Basic" fonts are intended as a way to provide additional weights for basic font users without waiting until the complete Andika character set is finished. So please don't request additional glyphs or characters to be supported in the New Basic fonts - such support will become available in the main Andika family in the future.

Known Issues

We know of the following problems. Please report any other problems you encounter.

  • Small y-tail alternate - U+01B4  LATIN SMALL LETTER Y WITH HOOK is not a part of this feature. We hope to add this character to the feature in a future release.
  • When the Literacy alternates feature is "False", italic and bold-italic versions of "a" and "g" are double-story glyphs. They should be single-story and this issue will be addressed in the future.
  • In order for the Slant italic specials feature to work, Literacy alternates must be set to "False".
  • The font claims to support more Unicode ranges than it actually does support. This should not be a big problem. The main place you may experience problems is when you have a character in your data that is not supported in the font, your application might not switch to a font that supports the character.
