Introduction to Annapurna SIL Fonts
Thank you for your interest in the Annapurna SIL fonts. The
goal for this product is to provide a Unicode-based font family with support for the many diverse languages
that use Devanagari script to produce readable, high-quality publications. The design is intended to be
highly readable, reasonably compact, and visually attractive. These fonts are named after the majestic
Annapurna mountain range of Nepal.
The fonts makes use of state-of-the-art OpenType® and Graphite
font technologies to provide accurate typography, such as the need to accurately position combining marks,
form conjuncts and provide Graphite features and OpenType Stylistic Sets for variant glyphs.
For applications that do not make use of Graphite or the OpenType Stylistic Sets feature, we provide a
font package for Nepal.
Overview of the Annapurna SIL Font Packages
Annapurna SIL is a TrueType font with “smart font”
capabilities added using OpenType and Graphite font technologies. This means that complex typographic issues
such as the placement of combining marks or the formation of conjuncts and ligatures are handled by the
font, provided you are running an application that provides an adequate level of
support for one of these smart font technologies.
Design
Annapurna SIL has a calligraphic design that reflects the
stroke contrast of writing the characters with a broad nib used for Devanagari.
Character repertoire
| Devanagari (0900..097F) |
except for 0978 |
| Devanagari Extended (A8E0..A8FB) |
 |
| Common Indic Number Forms (A830..A839) |
 |
| Codepage 1252 (Western) |
 |
The font includes the legacy Rupee Sign (U+20A8) and the Indian Rupee Sign (U+20B9) from the Currency
Symbols block. A selection of characters from the General Punctuation block, such as various-sized spaces,
are also supported; a utility such as SIL ViewGlyph can be used
to examine the exact repertoire of each font.
Font variants
There are some Devanagari character shape differences in different parts of South Asia. These can be
accessed by using Graphite features or the OpenType Stylistic Sets feature. The "Font Features" document
shows the Graphite and OpenType features supporting the variant glyphs.
Keyboards
Annapurna SIL does not include any keyboarding helps or
utilities. If you cannot use the built-in keyboards of the operating system, you should install the
appropriate keyboard and input method for the characters of the language you wish to use. If you want to
enter characters that are not supported by any system keyboard, the Keyman program (
http://www.tavultesoft.com) can be helpful on Windows systems. Also available for Windows is MSKLC
(
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx). For
other platforms, KMFL (
http://kmfl.sourceforge.net/), XKB (
http://www.x.org/wiki/XKB) or Ukelele (http://scripts.sil.org/ukelele) can be helpful.
If you want to enter characters that are not supported by any system keyboard, and to access the full
Unicode range, we suggest you use gucharmap, kcharselect on Ubuntu or similar software. Another method of
entering some symbols is provided by a few applications such as Adobe InDesign. They can display a glyph
palette that shows all the glyphs in a font and allow you to enter them by clicking on the glyph you
want.
Note:
We reserve the right to alter metrics in future releases. Future versions of the font may result in
different lines, line spacing, or paragraph lengths. Do not expect that a document laid out in one version
will always have the same page breaks, etc., in future fonts.
