Uninstallation Guide for EncCnvtrs 1.5 and 2.0

Bob Eaton, 2005-04-25

Both the 1.5 and 2.0 versions of EncConverters (the program used by the Data Conversion Macros version x2.35 and x2.40 respectively) have uninstallers that are listed in Add/Remove Programs. However, due to some recent update in the Windows operating system, you may have trouble uninstalling them. Follow the instructions below for whichever version you have installed. If you're not sure which version you have, note that the 2.0 version was only privately released in Beta form to certain users; so most people are probably using the 1.5 version. If in doubt, try them both.

Version 1.5 Uninstall instructions:

  1. Close all other applications; especially those that use EncConverters (e.g. Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc.)
  2. Open Control Panel (e.g. click Start / Control Panel).
  3. Open the Add or Remove Programs applet.
  4. Next to the Encoding Converters item click Change/Remove and then OK to remove EncCnvtrs. If the uninstall fails, then continue with step ‎5.
  5. Delete the folder where EncCnvtrs was installed (by default, C:Program FilesEncCnvtrs).
  6. Remove the document template that was installed (by default, C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice<version #--e.g. 10 or 11>Startup). The file is called something like Data Conversion Macro x235.dot).
  7. If you know how to edit the Registry, you can remove these keys (this step is suggested, but not critical):
    1. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTEncCnvtrs.*
    2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESILEncCnvtrs
  8. It is important that you reboot the machine before continuing with the installation of the new version.

Version 2.0 Uninstall instructions:

  1. Close all other applications; especially those that use EncConverters (e.g. Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc.)
  2. Open Control Panel (e.g. click Start / Control Panel).
  3. Open the Add or Remove Programs applet.
  4. Remove the following installed components (some of which may not exist depending on your installation):
    1. Encoding Converters (Clipboard Plug-in): Be sure this utility isn't running in the system tray when you uninstall this component.
    2. Encoding Converters (ICU Plug-in)
    3. Encoding Converters (ITrans Plug-in)
    4. Encoding Converters (UTrans Plug-in)
    5. EncCnvtrs
  5. If any of the uninstalls fail, then continue with step ‎6.
  6. Delete the folder where EncCnvtrs was installed (by default, C:Program FilesCommon FilesSILConverters).
  7. Remove any document templates that were installed (by default, in the C:Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataMicrosoftTemplates folder). You might have one or both of these files:
    1. Data Conversion Macro 0240.dot
    2. SpellFixer.dot
  8. If you know how to edit the Registry, you can remove these keys (this step is suggested, but not critical):
    1. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTEncCnvtrs.*
    2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESILEncodingConverterRepository (you can leave this if you'd like to keep your existing repository settings).
    3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESILEncCnvtrs
  9. If you still have the old 2.0 install set on your hard drive somewhere (e.g. C:DownloadsSILConverters), you should delete that folder as well.
  10. It is important that you reboot the machine before continuing with the installation of the new version.
