Galatia SIL

Greek Unicode Fonts

NRSI team, 2015-07-08

Note

2009-06-26: This font is now released under the SIL Open Font License (OFL). A small bug causing some Java[tm] applications on some Windows machines to not display glyphs in Galatia SIL was fixed.

Table of Contents for this web page:

Introduction

Galatia SIL is almost identical to the original custom-encoded SIL Galatia font, but is encoded according to Unicode 3.1 and is now released under SIL's SIL Open Font License (OFL).

The Galatia SIL fonts contain most of the symbols defined in Unicode 3.1 for Latin-1, Greek (excluding Coptic), Macintosh Character Set (US Roman), and 850WE/Latin-1 and are supplied in Regular and Bold weights.

Features

Two fonts from this typeface family are included in this release:

  • Galatia SIL Regular
  • Galatia SIL Bold

The Galatia SIL Greek Unicode Fonts are a new version of the SIL Galatia font released by SIL in 1997. This font package differs from SIL Galatia in the following ways:

  • They are Unicode fonts. The encoding is entirely different from the old fonts.
  • The name was changed to “Galatia SIL” to reflect new SIL font naming conventions.
  • The Latin-1 codepage (“A-Z”, “a-z” plus some punctuation, etc.) is included in the font. This is to assist with viewing Latin or Roman text. The Macintosh character set for US Roman and the 850 WE/Latin-1 encodings are also included.
  • There are no OpenType tables in this font. Thus, there is no automatic formation of the final sigma.

Keyboarding

You will need to use a keyboard program, but can use any Greek Unicode keyboard you prefer.

Note

Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X all provide a Greek Polytonic keyboard as part of the operating system. Those keyboards follow the standard Greek Polytonic keyboard layout. General instructions for installing Microsoft keyboards can be found here. Mac OS X keyboards can be accessed through System Preferences / International. Should you still wish to use the SIL Greek (polytonic precomposed) Keyman keyboard it is still available here.

Converting text

Data typed with the old SIL Galatia fonts will have to be re-typed or converted before it will display with the Galatia SIL fonts. Conversion routines for SIL Galatia can be found here.

Requirements

These fonts were designed for the following systems:

  • Windows 9x or greater
  • Mac OS X
  • Linux
  • Applications must support Unicode in order to use the fonts

Known Issues

The Galatia SIL font is not compatible with Microsoft Word 2004. The Galatia SIL fonts were developed before Word 2004 was released, so it was not possible to test them with Word 2004 prior to their release. We have encountered incompatibilities between Word 2004 and other SIL Unicode fonts as well, and have not determined the causes or cures.

In testing we found it was possible to type text in TextEdit, then cut and paste it into a Word 2004 document.

Please refer also to the information available on using SIL fonts on non-Windows operating systems.
