This is a sampling of known tools available on the Web for working with fonts.

Tools for font embedding and use of fonts on the Web

CSS2 Section 15: Fonts Section 15 from the World Wide Web Consortium's Cascading Style Sheets, Level 2 specification (CSS2) covers issues related to font formatting in Web pages that use CSS. CSS2 does not include mechanisms for font embedding or automatic download. Font download capability has been added to the draft for CSS3, but it is not known if or when this specification will be completed.

GlyphGate (Previously known as Fairy.) “GlyphGate is a Web server extension designed to enable use of fine typography, page layout and languages across user platforms and browsers.”

TrueDoc “Instead of relying on the default fonts that users have in their browsers, web authors can now create pages using the fonts they have on their systems with the assurance that those pages will display in a browser with their font formatting intact.” TrueDoc is supported in some browsers, such as Netscape. Other browsers, such as Internet Explorer, require a plug-in.

Microsoft WEFT “The Web Embedding Fonts Tool 'WEFT', lets Web authors create 'font objects' that are linked to their Web pages so that when an Internet Explorer user views the pages they'll see them displayed in the font style contained within the font object.” WEFT fonts are supported in Internet Explorer, but may not be supported in other browsers. Unlike TrueDoc, there is no plugin for use in other browsers.
