SIL Greek Font System Support

Galatia and Unicode

The SIL Greek Font System is a pre-Unicode or “legacy” font system which was originally released by SIL in 1998. These fonts have been superceded by Unicode-encoded Greek fonts, such as Galatia SIL or Gentium — a typeface for the nations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Why aren’t my accents centering?

Answer: If accents are not being correctly positioned, be sure you have the keyboards installed and activated.

Question: Why isn’t my keyboard functioning correctly?

Answer: If Smart Quotes is turned on in Microsoft Word or other programs you will get incorrect results when using the keyboards. Turn this feature off when using the keyboards.

Macintosh

Question: Why can’t I find the font in fonts listing?

Answer: In some applications the SIL Galatia font will appear near the end of font listings, and in Greek script for WorldScript-savvy applications.

Question: Why does my keyboard crash?

Answer: If you experience instability with SILKey increase the SILKey application memory partition setting. Note that the keyboards require SILKey version 1.2 or later.

Question: Why does SIL Galatia display as Geneva (or other font)?

Answer: If text in the SIL Galatia font sometimes gets displayed using Geneva (or some other font) or you experience instability when changing point sizes you may need to install the SIL Font Cache Extender. This is available from the SIL Greek page on the SIL Web site.

Known Issues

Windows

Acrobat - Samples of the SIL Greek Trans Italic and Bold Italic fonts contained in the documentation will not view or print correctly. They will be “overskewed” and look too slanted.

Word 97 - Due to the way Word 97 handles encodings and symbol fonts, you will probably have some difficulties when using the Greek fonts. Automatic line breaking will not occur correctly and saving documents as ASCII text may not give the desired results.

Word (in general) - Installed bitmaps are not used.

Windows NT - The 15 point bitmaps do not install correctly.

Macintosh

Weaver - If you try to recompile/install the Greek keyboards with Weaver you will get the message: “Warning! This keyboard contains KeyMan commands...”. You may safely ignore the message and proceed.

As these fonts and utilities are distributed at no cost, we are unable to provide a commercial level of personal technical support. This is the final release of these fonts.

Please note that these fonts are intended for use by experienced computer users. Installing and using these fonts is not a trivial matter. The most effective technical support is usually provided by an experienced computer user who can personally sit down with you at your computer to troubleshoot the problem.
