Nastaliq Navees Requirements

Jonathan Kew, 2010-04-20

Unicode Support

Please note that this font does not provide automatic support for the The Unicode Standard. The Nastaliq Navees font is an obsolete, symbol-encoded font requiring the obsolete QuickDraw GX technology. The use of Nastaliq Navees is discouraged. If you decide to download and use this font, please note there is no user support for the font. SIL has a Nastaliq style font called  Awami. We also provide four other Naskh fonts:  Arabic Fonts.

System requirements

  • Macintosh (68K-based or PowerPC) or compatible computer system.
  • System software 7.5 or later (7.6 is recommended, or MacOS 8 if GX printing is not required by your applications).
  • QuickDraw GX version 1.1.3 or later, or the GXGraphics extension. (Currently, a full QuickDraw GX installation is recommended if printing to PostScript devices; printing behavior under GXGraphics may be inferior, depending on the application.)
  • Adequate RAM for the application software to be used. For 68K-based systems, 12MB or more is recommended, and for PowerPC-based systems at least 16MB (physical memory, not including virtual memory or RAM "created" by RAMDoubler).
  • Arabic Language Kit version 1.0.1 is recommended, but there is also a "roman-encoded" font which can be used without the Language Kit.
  • GX-based application software, such as:

or others. Note that an application must use GX typography functions to work with Nastaliq Navees; applications which claim to use GX but in fact only use the GX printing system, not GX typography, will not be useful. To experiment with Nastaliq Navees before investing in major GX-based applications, you can try freely available programs such as GXWrite, PosterGX, demo versions of the commercial applications mentioned, or (if familiar with the TeX typesetting system) the shareware TeXgX.
